When we first met Superintendent (Supt) David Heng, 54, at the Police Security Command (SecCom) base, we were struck by his calm demeanour and a stack of old photographs neatly arranged on his desk. As we sifted through the photos, Supt Heng enthusiastically shared stories from his 36-year journey with the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

“I joined the Force in June 1988 as a trainee police constable,” he said, recalling how Hong Kong police dramas inspired him to serve and protect. His first posting as a patrol officer at Ang Mo Kio Police Division was both challenging and rewarding, laying a strong foundation for his career.

Three years later, he joined the then-Security Branch (now SecCom) in 1991, a defining moment in his journey. Over the years, he took on roles from training new officers to serving as a VIP escort and now as a Commanding Officer, leading a team of officers in ensuring the safety and security of cabinet Ministers and foreign dignitaries. To ensure that he remains physically and mentally fit to carry his duties at the frontline, Supt Heng maintains a disciplined lifestyle and works out regularly at the gym.

When asked about his most memorable experience, Supt Heng paused thoughtfully before replying, “The Trump-Kim Summit in 2018, where I was in charge of escorting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.” He described the intense preparations for the high-stakes event but shared that it was a simple moment of gratitude that left the greatest impression. “The Chief of Security held my hands and thanked us for our efforts. That was when I knew we had truly done a good job.”

Supt Heng has also witnessed significant changes in the SPF, from the transition to modern pistols to adopting cutting-edge technology, which he acknowledges as ‘game changers’ that truly enhance the efficiency of officers at the frontline. Before we ended our conversation, we asked him for his advice to younger officers. Without hesitation, he said, “Always expect the unexpected, and stop asking what the organisation can do for you. Ask yourself what you can do for the organisation. I guess you will feel happier and more accomplished at work if you can complete the tasks you set out to do.”
