For many, a career in the Singapore Police Force (SPF) is a calling – one driven by the commitment to uphold law and order, protect the community and make a tangible difference in society. But within the SPF, some officers are also given the rare opportunity to blend their passion for music with their dedication to policing.
The SPF Band provides an avenue for those who seek to serve not just through law enforcement but also through the unifying power of music.
Inspiring the Next Generation: SPF Band at the UAS Career Fair
At the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) Career Fair on 28 February 2025, SPF’s Deputy Director of Music, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Lau Lifeng, alongside officers from the SPF Band, shared insights into how graduates can pursue a meaningful career in policing while still embracing their artistic passions.
The session highlighted how SPF Band officers play a crucial role in public engagement, community outreach and ceremonial events – bringing people together through music while upholding the values of the Force.
As the UAS Career Fair concluded, students walked away with a deeper understanding of policing – a dynamic career that offers opportunities to grow, develop new skills, and even integrate personal passions into the profession.
Music as a Bridge to the Community
Beyond ceremonial performances, the SPF Band plays a critical role in community policing efforts. Whether performing at National Day celebrations, Police outreach events or engagement sessions with schools and the public, the Band serves as an ambassador to reinforce the connection between the SPF and the community.
This commitment to engagement was exemplified on 12 February 2025, when the SPF Band performed at ITE College East as part of the college's commemoration of Total Defence Day. The performance highlighted the role of music in fostering national spirit and unity, engaging students and staff through a dynamic showcase of cultural diversity.
This year’s Total Defence Day theme focused on the collective responsibility of safeguarding Singapore. Reflecting this spirit, the performance was a collaborative effort involving Police officers, reservists, and members of the Episodic Volunteering Programme (EVP). Their combined efforts underscored how unity and teamwork are crucial in ensuring national security.
A Career That Strikes the Right Chord
The SPF Band is more than just a musical ensemble – it’s a symbol of dedication, unity and service. For aspiring musicians considering a career in law enforcement, the SPF Band provides a fulfilling pathway that harmonises passion with purpose.
