Previously a radar operator on board the CPC PH51, Sgt Nurul now serves as a Staff Officer in the CPS while balancing her new role as a mother.

From Coastal Patrol Craft to Parenthood
After joining the PCG in July 2020, Sgt Nurul served as a radar operator aboard Coastal Patrol Craft (CPC) PH51 in the Coastal Patrol Squad (CPS). Her days were filled with maritime patrols and search-and-rescue operations. However, this changed when she found out that she was expecting.

Sgt Nurul and her husband Sgt Muhammad Khuraihan Bin Amron have embraced parenthood as a family.

To enhance support for working mothers, the SPF trialled a transition posting framework in 2024. Under this pioneering initiative, officers who are expecting may take on roles better suited to their needs, with support extending up to 24 months postpartum.

For Sgt Nurul, this framework proved transformative, allowing her to transition seamlessly to a Staff Officer role at the CPS. This new position lets her focus on crucial administrative and data management responsibilities that keep PCG operations running smoothly.

“The structured nature of this framework gives us clarity and confidence,” Sgt Nurul explains. “We now have a clear path forward that considers both our professional growth and personal wellbeing. This enables us to continue contributing meaningfully while embracing motherhood.”

For Sgt Nurul, safeguarding Singapore’s waters and nurturing her child are roles that beautifully complement each other.

Motherhood in Blue: A Personal Journey
Since welcoming her daughter in September 2024, Sgt Nurul has gained fresh insights into her role as an officer. “Every patrol, every operation, now carries a deeper meaning for me,” she reflects. “I’m even more driven to keep Singapore safe. It has also taught me patience and understanding – qualities that enhance my service in ways I never expected.”

Sgt Nurul is also grateful to have helpful supervisors as well as the ability to tap on flexible work arrangements during this period. “The support I’ve received has been incredible,” she shares. “Flexible work arrangements also allow me to contribute effectively while taking care of my family.”

The most rewarding aspect? “Watching my child grow while serving our nation,” she says. “These roles complement each other perfectly – the care I show my family mirrors my values at work!”

Following Her Lead
Watching Sgt Nurul serve with passion has been a constant source of inspiration for Sgt Khuraihan, leading him to apply for and join the SPF in March 2024. “Nurul’s commitment to the Force and her compassion for those she serves motivated me to follow in her footsteps,” he shares.

As a Ground Response Force (GRF) officer at Sembawang Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC), Sgt Khuraihan conducts patrols of the neighbourhood to safeguard the community: “Being a Police officer gives me a sense of purpose and fulfilment, and I’m excited to contribute in my own way!”

“With the right support, we can overcome any hurdle,” says Sgt Nurul.

Looking ahead, Sgt Nurul hopes to return to frontline duties in time. Meanwhile, she offers these words of encouragement to other female officers: “Life’s transitions can catch us off guard, but the SPF’s supportive environment empowers us to thrive. “Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing mums out there!”
