Aides-de-Camp (ADCs) and Honorary ADCs (HADCs) comprise officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). These officers are appointed by the President’s Office and they work together as a team to plan, coordinate and execute state functions and events attended by the President.

Police Life speaks with Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jelene Ong, a newly appointed HADC, to learn more about her journey!

Tell us more about your career in the SPF.
After joining the SPF in 2017, I was posted to Clementi Police Division in 2018 as an Investigation Officer after completing my training at Training Command. From 2020 to 2024, I assumed the role of Team Leader at Bukit Timah Neighbourhood Police Centre, where I had the privilege of leading a dedicated team that became like family.

I’m currently an Operations Officer in the Crime Control Division, Operations Department, focusing on developing upstream crime prevention measures, particularly in youth crime and shop theft. The SPF regularly conducts crime prevention initiatives for youths, working with our partners to engage and guide them towards positive life choices.

Beyond my core duties, I’m also a Crimewatch Mandarin host and Negotiator in the Crisis Negotiation Unit.

From investigations and frontline policing to policy work, and now serving as an HADC – ASP Jelene Ong’s policing journey has been a fulfilling one.

What motivated you to apply to be an HADC?
The HADC role offers a unique opportunity to serve Singapore. My interest grew after learning about other HADCs’ experiences, including from my husband, a fellow Police officer who has served two years as an HADC.

I understand the responsibility and commitment required and, while there’s much for me to learn, especially regarding protocol, I look forward to working alongside officers from different organisations and growing from this experience.

Tell us about a memorable event where you served as an HADC.
I was fortunate to serve at the swearing-in ceremony of Cabinet ministers on 23 May 2025 – a significant state event that typically occurs once every five years! It was particularly memorable as I witnessed firsthand the solemnity of the occasion and the precision required in supporting such an important ceremony.

What qualities and skills must HADCs possess?
An HADC needs to have strong attention to detail, composure under pressure and protocol awareness. Most importantly, we must work well in a team and maintain high standards of professionalism while serving with dedication.

ASP Jelene Ong is grateful for the opportunity to take on a role that provides unique learning experiences.

What does being an HADC mean to you?
It’s both an honour and a responsibility to serve the highest office in the nation. I also appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with other HADCs from the various uniformed services. Being part of a diverse team enriches our experience and enables us to learn from one another. I look forward to contributing and growing both personally and professionally!
