Anticipation and a congratulatory atmosphere filled the multi-purpose hall at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Headquarters on 23 July 2025.

It was a special occasion for three Singapore Police Force (SPF) officers as they received their awards at the MHA Scholarship and Sponsorship Ceremony from Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs.

DSP Ng is a recipient of the MHA Emerging Skills Scholarship, which was introduced in 2024.

DSP Ng Liang Jie: Driving Digital Transformation
Starting his SPF journey in 2016, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ng Liang Jie was first attached to Ang Mo Kio North Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) as a Ground Response Force (GRF) officer. He then served as an Investigation Officer from 2017 to 2020 at Ang Mo Kio Police Division and Woodlands Police Division, before returning to Ang Mo Kio North NPC as Team Leader.

“I wanted a career that’s meaningful,” he shares. “The SPF’s mission resonates deeply with me, and the officers I work with keep me motivated to serve through tough times.”

Since 2023, DSP Ng has been managing investigation software tools as an Operations Officer at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

One such project involved working with the HTX (Home Team Science and Technology Agency) to explore the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to transcribe video recordings of interviews. This technology is presently undergoing trials to assess its effectiveness in augmenting manual transcription.

This project also sparked DSP Ng’s interest in coding, and he took up Python programming courses to deepen his skills.

DSP Ng was awarded the MHA Emerging Skills Scholarship, which supports officers in deepening their expertise in emerging areas like Data Analytics and AI. Through this scholarship, he’ll pursue a Master of IT in Business at Singapore Management University. His studies will focus on AI technology and advanced operational tools, both of which he hopes to apply in the SPF upon completing his programme in 2026.

Reflecting on the award, DSP Ng is grateful for the SPF's support in nurturing officers through continuous learning.

“I’ll miss my colleagues in the Force,” he shares. “But I’m grateful for this opportunity, and I hope to return with fresh perspective to contribute to keeping Singapore safe.”

SI Hairi’s 16-year journey has brought him through the planning of major national events.

SI Muhammad Noor Hairi: Keeping National Events Safe and Secure
A veteran of the Force since 2008, Station Inspector (SI) Muhammad Noor Hairi Bin Abdul Salam started as a GRF officer at Yishun North NPC, responding to incidents on the frontlines. In 2014, he joined the Community Policing Unit, where he developed deeper community engagement skills.

“I’ve always wanted to serve and protect the community,” SI Hairi shares, reflecting on his inspiration to join the SPF.

Since 2022, he has served as an Assistant Operations Officer at Woodlands Police Division. His responsibilities include planning and coordinating major national events like the upcoming National Day Parade and Formula One Singapore Grand Prix.

He finds his frontline experience useful in planning for operations. “It taught me how decisions affect frontline officers in real time,” he notes. “I can better anticipate gaps and think on my feet.”

SI Hairi is a recipient of the MHA Degree Scholarship and will pursue a degree in Public Safety and Security at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) in August 2025. He hopes his studies will bridge his ground operations experience with strategic planning, offering a comprehensive perspective on national security efforts.

SI Hairi’s family is extremely proud of his decision to take up the scholarship.

SI Hairi is immensely grateful for his supportive supervisors and peers who believed in him and gave him space to grow. He also hopes his journey will set an example for his three children about lifelong learning.

“Pursuing a degree has always been my personal goal," he reveals. “This scholarship is the chance I’ve been waiting for, to fulfil a lifelong aspiration and continue growing both personally and professionally!”

Sgt Melrize joined the SPF to pursue a career that goes beyond what others can offer.

Sgt Melrize Ng: Resilience on the Frontline
When Sergeant (Sgt) Melrize Ng joined the Police Coast Guard (PCG) in 2015, it marked an exciting new step for her.

“Previously, as an admin assistant in the private sector, every day felt mundane, with little opportunity for growth,” she shares.

Sgt Melrize saw how her sister, who served in the Republic of Singapore Navy, had learned valuable skills that went beyond those of an office job. This prompted her to make the leap to the PCG. "The SPF was it," she affirmed.

Sgt Melrize started in frontline operations at the Coastal Patrol Squadron (CPS). After five years in the CPS, she moved on to a staff role at the PCG’s Operations and Security Branch in 2022.

In her current role, she meticulously oversees day-to-day operations, coordinating vital inter-agency efforts in Singapore’s territorial waters.

Beyond her policing duties, Sgt Melrize is an avid sportsperson. With a passion for tug-of-war, she represented Singapore in 2018 at the Tug-of-War International Federation Indoor World Championships in China.

“Sports helps me get through my demanding physical training, which is part of being a Police officer,” she says.

Sgt Melrize’s family and colleagues are incredibly supportive of her decision to pursue further studies.

Sgt Melrize will be pursuing a Bachelor of Public Safety and Security at the SUSS, under the MHA Degree Scholarship. Expressing her excitement, she shares: “Receiving the scholarship motivates me to work harder, and I’m looking forward to a brand-new learning experience!”
