The Masagos Cup (Futsal Tournament 2015) was held today at Kovan Sports

Centre. Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.

2          The Masagos Cup is one of the highlights under the “We Strive” programme, which offers a platform for Home Team officers to mentor youths from secondary schools in eastern Singapore. There are a total of eight teams this year with Bedok South Secondary School and Broadrick Secondary School eventually competing in the finals. The team from Broadrick Secondary School was crowned as the champion after winning 3:1 in the penalties following a 2:2 tie in the finals. A novelty match involving Home Team Eastern Sector mentors and CARE counsellors-school social workers was also held. Please refer to Annex A for the photographs of the event.

3          Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad said, “I am proud to see this Futsal Tournament grow over the last 4 years since we kick-started the tournament in 2012. The organisers and mentors from the Home Team, parents, teachers, and the youths themselves have contributed to the continued success of this tournament. From the matches I have seen today, the players showed good football skills, effort, teamwork and more importantly, sportsmanship. The tournament is one of the highlights under the “We Strive” programme, where Home Team officers reach out to secondary school students and engage them through meaningful activities such as sports. Through this programme, we want to channel the youths’ exuberance and energy into something they have a passion for – football. The Home Team is committed to reaching out to youths. We want to impart important values such as discipline, commitment, confidence and teamwork, which will put our youths in good stead for the rest of their lives, and steer them away from a life of crime.  We cannot do this alone. We need the support of families, schools, and the community at large.  It is heartening to see parents and teachers here today, mingling amongst the crowd and supporting our youths. Let’s continue to play an active role in the lives of our children and support them in making the right choices. Together, we can form a support system to help our youths make the right choices in life.”
