Since joining the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in 2016, Sergeant (Sgt) Demian Chan has dedicated himself to safeguarding the public. Currently serving as an Emergency Response Team (ERT) officer in Bedok Police Division, he operates on the frontline of high-risk incidents, where vigilance, precision and quick decision-making are key.
From patrolling high-footfall areas to responding to armed threats, Sgt Demian Chan shares the realities of the role and the purpose behind the uniform.
Why did you join the SPF?
I joined the SPF after graduating from Polytechnic. A conversation with a friend introduced me to the idea of serving my National Service in the SPF while earning a full salary. It felt like a meaningful and practical path – and I’ve never looked back!
What led you to become an ERT officer?
My interest in tactical policing developed during my In-Situ Reaction Team training in 2020. Being exposed to skills like dual-weapon handling and close-quarters battle made me realise that I wanted to be in a role where I could apply these capabilities regularly. That led me to join the ERT in 2022.
What does your role as an ERT officer involve?
Our primary role is to respond to high-risk incidents, including those involving armed or dangerous individuals. On a day-to-day basis, we also conduct high visibility foot and vehicular patrols at bustling locations to safeguard critical infrastructure. This helps to deter crime and maintain a strong Police presence on the ground.
Tell us about a memorable experience you’ve had as an ERT officer.
Shortly after I joined the ERT, I was deployed for the Singapore Airshow 2022. While patrolling the event grounds, we interacted with air force personnel from different countries. Some of them shared that they felt reassured seeing us on duty. It was a simple moment, but it reminded me of the impact we can have.
What are some challenges you face on the job?
The physical conditions can be tough, especially during foot patrols in hot or poorly ventilated environments. But it’s part of the job, and we learn to adapt.Beyond the physical demands, ERT officers are trained to handle high-stakes situations that test our ability to make quick and sound decisions. Over time, I’ve learned to stay calm under pressure and trust my training.
What keeps you motivated as an officer?
It’s the knowledge that what I do contributes directly to the safety and security of Singapore. That keeps me going every day!
How do you unwind outside of work?
I go to the gym, run or take fitness classes. It helps me manage stress, maintain a healthy balance and widen my circle of friends. Spending time with my family also plays a big part in keeping me grounded!
What are some of the things we can do to be mindful of our safety?
Stay vigilant. For example, avoid using both earpieces while commuting, and don’t use your phone when crossing the road. Small habits like these can make a big difference! You can also download the SGSecure app to receive timely alerts during emergencies.
