Police have arrested two men, aged 26 and 29, for their suspected involvement in loanshark harassment Island-wide.

 

Between 13 and 20 January 2015, multiple cases of UML harassment were reported island-wide. Upon receiving the information, officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted a joint operation with officers from the Jurong Police Division. Through intensive ground enquires and investigations, the officers established the identities of the two suspects and arrested them on 21 and 22 January 2015 at Woodlands Road.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two suspects are believed to be involved in the reported cases of loanshark harassments island-wide, where loanshark graffiti were scrawled on walls. Loanshark paraphernalia such as marker pens, papers with suspected debtors’ addresses, mobile phones and motorcycles were also seized for investigations.

 

The suspects will be charged in Court on 23 January 2014. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of any acts of loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.

  

Members of public are advised to call the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800 924 5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in illegal loansharking activities or call ‘999’ for urgent police assistance.
