Police have arrested a 54-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of shop theft at a supermarket in VivoCity.

On 21 January 2015, Police received a report on a case of shop theft at a supermarket in VivoCity, where six cans of abalone amounting to $416.80 were stolen. With the aid of CCTV footage, officers from the Crime Strike Force (CSF) of Bukit Merah West Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) conducted extensive ground enquiries to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him in Tampines on 26 January 2015 at 9pm.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 28 January 2014 for the offence of Theft in Dwelling, which is punishable under Section 380 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence carries a maximum jail term of seven years’ imprisonment, or fine, or both.

Police would like to remind all retail outlets to be extra vigilant against shop thieves during the festive period, especially when large crowds throng the shopping malls and supermarkets for festive goods. Such offences can be prevented if adequate measures are put in place. Retailers should:

  1. Display expensive items in locked display shelves, which are only accessible by the staff;

  2. Enhance the store’s security system by installing CCTVs and convex mirrors. Ensure that the cameras are in good working condition;

  3. Avoid displaying expensive goods such as canned abalone near the store’s entry and exit points. They should be placed at strategic locations within your premises where they can be monitored by staff or placed under CCTV surveillance. Use empty cans for those near the entry and exit points;

  4. Use an electronic tagging system;

  5. Display advisory signage or warnings against shop theft; and

  6. Advise all staff to be observant and vigilant.
