Police have arrested a 56 year-old man suspected of theft at People’s Park Complex.


2          On 27 January 2015 at about 3pm, the victim was remitting S$4000 to China when an unidentified man snatched the money from the victim and fled. The victim’s cry for assistance attracted the attention of the complex’s security officer who was able to detain the man before police’s arrival. The 56 year-old man was subsequently arrested. A search was conducted on the suspect and a knife measuring about 20 cm in length, was found in his possession.


3          Investigations are ongoing. Anyone convicted for an offence of theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 3 years, or with fine, or with both and for the offence of possession of offensive weapon under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances, and Offensive Weapon Act, Chapter 65, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 6 strokes.


4          Commander of Central Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Daniel Tan, commended the security officer, Mr Jason Jai Ganesh for his public spiritedness leading to the arrest.


5          Police would like to remind members of public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Be alert of your surroundings at all times especially of suspicious persons who could be following them.

  • Be wary of strangers approaching you or trying to distract your attention.

  • Avoid carrying excessive cash in public, especially when you are alone. You should also refrain from wearing or exposing their jewelleries or monies in public that could potentially make you easy targets for crime. Arrange for a trusted friend or companion to escort you, where possible.

  • When confronted, you should remain calm. You should not put up a struggle especially if the culprit is armed with sharp objects like a knife or pen knife. You should try to take note as much details of the culprit as you possibly can, such as his appearance, clothing, height and other physical description. You should also take note of the culprit’s direction and mode of escape. 

  • Call ‘999’ as soon as it is safe to do so.
