In-Vehicle Cameras Help Bedok Police Division Keep a Lookout in the Fight Against Crime
Bedok Police Division launched the Vehicles On Watch (VOW) project at the Pasir Ris West Emergency Preparedness Day 2015 held today, 17 May 2015 at Blk 757B Pasir Ris Street 71 from 9am to 12pm. The Pasir Ris West Emergency Preparedness Day 2015 is jointly organised by People’s Association’s Pasir Ris West Community Emergency & Engagement Committee, Singapore Civil Defence Force and Pasir Ris Neighbourhood Police Centre.
2 Guest-of-Honour Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, Grassroots Advisor & MP for Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC officially launched the VOW project.

3 In-vehicle cameras are growing in popularity among motorists who wish to protect their vehicles from becoming targets of crime. The sight of an in-vehicle camera is a strong deterrent for would-be criminals. On top of that, the cameras act as additional ‘eyes’ in the community and their footages may provide evidence for the Police.
4 Recognising the potential of this technology in deterring and solving crimes like motor vehicle theft and theft from vehicles, Bedok Police Division started the VOW project. The VOW project, part of the Community Safety and Security Programme, brings together residents who own in-vehicle cameras, so as to keep the vehicles in their neighbourhood safe. Participating residents in this project may be approached by the Police for footage from their in-vehicle cameras for the purpose of investigations.
5 To date, about 760 vehicle owners with in-vehicle cameras are on board the VOW project across 56 car parks in Bedok, Changi, Geylang, Marine Parade, Pasir Ris and Tampines. These VOW car parks are identified by a sign installed at the car park entrance.
6 The Police would like to invite vehicle owners with in-vehicle cameras to join this initiative to fight crime in their neighbourhood. Police also encourage vehicle owners to purchase an in-vehicle camera that records for 24-hours and not only when the engine is in operation. This allows for the vehicle’s surroundings to be recorded after the vehicle is parked.
7 The Police also urge drivers to check that they have not left behind their keys or valuables before leaving their vehicles.
8 Commander of Bedok Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Alvin Moh said, “Installation of a 24-hour in-vehicle camera allows for the vehicle’s surroundings to be recorded even after the vehicle is parked. With more in-vehicle cameras watching, residents can look forward to safer car parks and safer neighbourhoods.”
