Two men, aged 24 and 39, will be charged in court on 28 July 2023 for their suspected involvement in separate cases of Possession and Distribution of Child Abuse Material, amongst other offences.
2 The 24-year-old and 39-year-old men were arrested in October 2021 in the vicinity of Choa Chu Kang Crescent and Boon Lay Drive respectively, for allegedly possessing child abuse material. Both men will be charged with one count of Possession of Child Abuse Material under Section 377BK(1) of the Penal Code. The cases are:
- The 24-year-old man was also suspected to have attempted to distribute child abuse material and be in possession of voyeuristic videos. In addition, between 2018 and 2019, he allegedly took voyeuristic videos of women on several occasions. He will face additional charges of attempted distribution of child abuse material under Section 377BI(1)(a) read with Section 511(1) of the Penal Code, possession of voyeuristic recordings under Section 377BD(1) of the Penal Code and insulting the modesty of a woman under Section 509 of the Penal Code.
- The 39-year-old man was also found to be in possession of obscene videos. He will face an additional charge of possession of obscene material under Section 30(1) of the Films Act.
Any person who has in possession, or has gained access to child abuse material, and knows or has reason to believe that the material is child abuse material shall be guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years, and shall also be liable to fine or to caning.
Those who distribute child abuse material, or have in possession of child abuse material for the purpose of such distribution, and know or have reason to believe that the material is child abuse material shall be guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine or to caning.
The Police will continue to take tough enforcement action against online child sexual exploitation activities, including the possession and distribution of child abuse materials. Those found engaging in such activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
