The police have arrested a 20-year-old Singaporean woman for her suspected involvement in a case of rash act causing hurt.

On 15 July 2020 at 11.50am, the police received a report from a 71-year-old man informing that he had allegedly been assaulted by an unknown woman with a wooden serving pan after she had taken his taxi and alighted at Prinsep Street. The woman was also allegedly not wearing a mask in the taxi and left after refusing to pay her taxi fare.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on 16 July 2020 at 3.20pm along Kitchener Road. The woman is believed to be involved in prior cases of fare evasion.

Police investigations are ongoing. The woman will also be investigated for breaching safe distancing measures under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Public Transport Council (PTC) are also looking into the matter of fare evasion by the woman.

The offence of rash act causing hurt carries an imprisonment term of up to one year, a fine of up to $5000, or both. The offence of failure to pay taxi fare carries a fine of up to $1,000, and where the person is a repeat offender, a fine of up to $2,000, an imprisonment of up to 6 months, or both.
