Man Arrested Within 10 Hours For Aggravated Rape

The Police have arrested a 28-year-old man on 20 August 2021 for his alleged involvement in a case of aggravated rape.

On 19 August 2021 at about 9.35pm, Police were alerted to a case where a 52-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted by an unknown man in a building in Toa Payoh. The woman suffered minor injuries during the incident. The unknown man fled the scene thereafter.

Police officers from Tanglin Police Division, Criminal Investigation Department, Public Transport Security Command and Police Operations Command Centre worked closely together on the case, and with the assistance of Police cameras and CCTV footages, managed to trace the man’s escape route and identify him quickly. The man was arrested at a residential unit in Ang Mo Kio within 10 hours of the report made.

The man will be charged in court on 21 August 2021 with aggravated rape under Section 375(1A)(a) punishable under Section 375(3)(a)(i) of the Penal Code. A court order will be sought to remand the man for further investigations. If convicted, the offence of aggravated rape carries an imprisonment term between 8 and 20 years and shall be punishable with caning of not less than 12 strokes.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee, said, “I wish to commend all the officers involved in the swift arrest of the suspect, who had committed a brazen act of sexual assault. In this case, Police cameras and CCTV footages played a key role in aiding the Police to establish the identity of the suspect quickly, leading to his arrest within 10 hours of the report. The Police take a serious view of sexual crimes and will spare no effort to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly to face the full brunt of the law.”
