Man Arrested For Theft Within 24 Hours

The Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of theft.

On 23 July 2023 at about 6.40pm, the Police received a report from a victim whose jewellery was purportedly stolen by the 24-year-old man. The man had allegedly posed as a legitimate buyer and met the victim to complete the transaction. However, after meeting the victim, the man allegedly took the jewellery item and fled. The jewellery item valued more than $27,000 was purportedly stolen.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 24 July 2023. The stolen jewellery was recovered.

The man will be charged in court on 26 July 2023 with the offence of theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to three years and a fine.

The Police would like to advise members of the public to take the following precautions when meeting others to exchange goods:

  1. Always meet in a well-lit, public place, with high footfall. Avoid secluded or private areas;

  2. If possible, bring a friend or family member with you to the meeting. Having an extra person can deter potential criminals and provide an added layer of safety;

  3. Avoid bringing unnecessary valuables or large sums of money to the meeting. Only bring the exact amount needed for the transaction; and

  4. If you are the seller, avoid openly displaying expensive items before the transaction is complete. For transactions involving expensive goods, consider meeting at a location with surveillance cameras.
