Road traffic accidents increased in 2025, following a persistent upward trend over the last few years. The Traffic Police (TP) will continue to tackle this with tougher enforcement measures, such as enhanced penalties for speeding and road traffic offences (which came into effect earlier this year). TP will also do more to educate vulnerable road users on good road safety habits.

1. Traffic Accidents Increased

The total number of traffic accidents that caused injuries climbed by about 7% to 7,560 cases in 2025. Deaths from traffic accidents also rose from 139 cases in 2024 to 147 cases in 2025, showing a steady rise since 2022.

The primary causes were due to drivers failing to keep a lookout, not having proper control over their vehicles or changing lanes without due care.

The number of red-light running related accidents rose by 27.1%. However, drink-driving accidents fell by 6.0%. Drink driving remains one of the Police’s top priorities because of the grave consequences that could have been prevented.

2. A Rise in Speeding Violations

Speeding violations detected surged by 25.9% to 253,550 cases in 2025, due to intensified speed enforcement measures. However, accidents from speeding dropped by 5.9% to 515 cases last year, along with speeding accidents that caused deaths, which fell by 10.9% to 41 cases.

3. Elderly Pedestrians Involved in Fatal Accidents More Than Doubled; Motorcyclists Remain Vulnerable

A majority of fatalities were elderly pedestrians and motorcyclists. They remain the most vulnerable road users. In particular, fatal accidents involving seniors more than doubled, making up 75% of all pedestrian fatalities (even though they only constitute 12.9% of the population).

Jaywalking was a major cause – the elderly accounted for 83.3% of all deaths caused by jaywalking.

Additionally, motorcyclists and pillion riders made up over half of all traffic deaths, being disproportionally represented (as motorcycles constitute only 15.0% of all vehicles).
